初期教會用它來代替猶太教的逾越節。開始壹些教會在猶太教歷的尼撒月14日舉行紀念活動;325年尼西亞會議規定每年春分月圓後的第壹個星期天為復活節。1582年西歐改用格列歷(即公歷)。
東方壹些教會仍沿用儒略歷,因而其復活節通常比天主教和新教要晚壹二個星期,甚至五星期。節日期間人們互贈復活節彩蛋,象征生命和繁榮。由於每年的春分日都不固定,所以每年復活節的具體日期也不確定。但節期大致在3月22日至4月25日之間。
