很早很早的時候，在基督紀元以前，凱爾特人在夏末舉行儀式，感激上蒼和太陽的恩惠。當時的占蔔者點燃並施巫術以驅趕據說在四周遊蕩的妖魔鬼怪。後來，羅馬人用果仁和蘋果來慶祝的豐收節，便與凱爾特人的10月31日融合成萬聖節了。
美國和加拿大的孩子們在這天穿戴上古怪的服飾去按鄰居家的門鈴，並按傳統發出"是款待我還是要我耍花招"的威脅。鄰居們不管是否被嚇著，總是準備了壹些糖果、蘋果等點心，孩子們則壹壹收入自己的袋內。 年輕人在這壹天更是不能免俗的，參加最酷的化妝舞會，或者到時髦的餐廳吃上壹頓恐怖的萬聖節大餐！
萬聖節是諸聖節（All Saints’ Day）的俗稱，本是天主教等基督宗教的宗教節日，時間是11月1日。天主教把諸聖節定為彌撒日，每到這壹天，除非有不可抗拒的理由，否則所有信徒都要到教堂參加彌撒，緬懷已逝並升入天國的所有聖人，特別是那些天主教歷史上的著名聖人。緊隨諸聖節之後的是11月2日的諸靈節（All Souls’ Day），這壹天緬懷的則是已逝但還未升入天國的靈魂，信徒們會祈禱他們早日升天。
萬聖節前夕，在每年的10月31日，是西方的傳統節日。許多亞洲地區的人將萬聖節前夕誤稱為萬聖節。萬聖節前夜源自古代凱爾特民族（Celtic）的新年節慶，此時也是祭祀亡魂的時刻，在避免惡靈幹擾的同時，也以食物祭拜祖靈及善靈以祈平安渡過嚴冬。前壹天晚上（也就是萬聖節前夜），小孩們會穿上化妝服，戴上面具，挨家挨戶收集糖果。
萬聖節的活動原來是非常簡單的，而且大部分是在教堂裏進行。但在整個歐洲，人們都把萬聖節前夜看作盡情玩鬧、講鬼故事和互相嚇唬的好機會。於是人們不再把這節日用來贊美秋天，卻讓它變成神怪、巫婆和鬼魂的節日。
